The Bob Harris's Current Best Artist Selections

Previously I tried to condense the current playlist into a 'ten of the best' format, which meant that I had to leave out artists and their albums that I play regularly but didn't quite make it into the top ten so upon revision of the page I thought I'd try something different.... below you'll find four catagories that cover best the music that I play - each with their own introduction so without further ado.... Read On.

Still standing after all these years

-- DELETED FOR BREVITY --

Sisters are doin' it!

Women have hitherto found it hard to establish themselves in their own right in the male dominated music business... until now. Despite (or because of) the fact that the record companies are desperate to uncover 'the new Alanis Morissette', strong, creative, independant women are now finding space to deliver albums on their own terms. The artists I've listed are among those most played on the programme currently.

Shawn Colvin A Few Small Repairs Columbia
Mary-Chapin Carpenter A Place In The World Columbia
Judie Tzuke Under The Angels Big Moon
Leah Andreone Veiled BMG
Holly Palmer Holly Palmer Reprise
Beth Orton Trailer Park Heavenly
Patti Rothberg Between The 1 & The 9 Chrysalis
Sheryl Crow Sheryl Crow A&M
Terry Gonda Indeed Plus What Key Music
Iris DeMent The Way I Should Warner Bros.

The Best of the Rest

Afro Celt Sound System Afro Celt Sound Music Real World
Recorded at Peter Gabriel's studio, a mix of Celtic Pipes and Jamaican rhythms. Exquisite.
James Hunter Believe What I Say Ace Records
Van Morrison guests on rock/jazz/funk flavoured 14-track set. Great voice.
Verve Pipe BMG
Hard-edged USA modern rock, flavoured with lyrically obscure power ballads
Don Edwards West Of Yesterday Warner Bros.
Pure campfire. Cowboy songs by one of the acknowledged experts of the genre.
Various Childline 10th Anniversay Polygram
Paul Weller (Feelin' Alright), Ocean Colour Scene (Huckelberry Grove), Alisha's Attic (Still Life) among the 'best of brit-pop' tracks.
Otis Grand Perfume & Grime Sequel
Fantastic live, Otis has been voted the UK's best guitarist for the past 7 years. This is his ambition fulfilling New Orleans recording. Traditional Blues is in good hands.
Eric Bibb Spirit And The Blues Opus III
Absolutely brilliant album from Stockholm-based American singer/guitarist features authentic mix of Blues and Gospel flavoured songs. If you buy only one album this year, make sure it's this one!
